Tooth Extractions

In certain cases when a tooth is severely damaged or causing issues for other teeth, it may be necessary to conduct a tooth extraction. Some situations that may warrant a tooth extraction include advanced tooth decay, irreparable damage, prolonged gum disease, poor tooth positioning, and pre-orthodontic treatment. At Bosler Implant and Cosmetic Dentistry, we work to make the process of removing a tooth as easy as possible so that patients can focus on improving their oral health after the procedure.

Overview

Typically, an extraction can be performed with local anesthesia. This should eliminate any pain during the procedure, although patients typically feel pressure.

After a tooth has been extracted, our goal is to initiate the healing process as quickly as possible by forming a blood clot at the extraction site. This is accomplished by having the patient bite down on a gauze pad for about 30 to 45 minutes. Once the clot has formed, the patient must be careful not to disturb it in any fashion. This means avoiding using a straw, rinsing vigorously, smoking, consuming drugs or alcohol, and participating in intense exercise for a minimum of 24 hours after the procedure.

Patients should use an ice pack on their outer cheek near the extraction site to reduce swelling. In most cases, patients are able to resume their normal brushing and flossing practices just one day after the extraction. Patients who experience intense pain or uncontrollable bleeding at any time should contact our office as soon as possible.

Complete Diagnostics

In addition to regular teeth extractions, our practice also conducts wisdom teeth removals. Also known as the third molars, a person’s wisdom teeth usually develop during the late teen years or the early 20s. Although some people end up keeping their wisdom teeth for life, they are often removed due to the severe angle that they grow at and the major crowding problems that they typically cause for other teeth.

The recovery time for wisdom teeth removal varies from patient to patient. Most patients require about a week’s worth of time to become fully healed. During the recovery process, patients should be sure to get lots of rest, consume plenty of fluids, and eat only soft foods.
